Marathon: Federal grant received for new fire truck
From: www.dmtimes.net

"

By Andrew Stuart

Staff writer

The Marathon Volunteer Fire Department has been

awarded $54,000 in federal funds, which will help pay for a new fire

truck, U.S. Sen. John Cornyn announced last week.

The grant, awarded by the Federal Emergency

Management Agency, will allow the fire department to pay off the new

truck. The truck is expected to be put into use shortly after

Christmas, Marathon Fire Chief Daniel Eaton said.

Eaton said the truck will improve the department’s

ability to fight fires both within Marathon and outlying areas.

"This truck is designed to be able to go up to the

houses in the mountains," he said. "It’s a residential truck, and it

will also be the first response for vehicle accidents."

About $43,000 of the FEMA funds will be used to pay

for the truck, with the remainder to fund other firefighting equipment.

The federal funds complement other funding sources for the new vehicle,

including about $108,000 from the Texas Forest Service, $10,000 from

Brewster County and $2,000 generated through local donations.

The new truck will replace the department’s 1963

vehicle, which does not provide water pressure at the levels required

by law. The new truck will also be able to travel at the speed limit,

as opposed to the current vehicle, which can’t exceed about 45 miles

per hour, Eaton said.

"We’ll be able to decrease the response time," he said.

The truck will also be a factor in lowering insurance rates for homes and businesses in the area. "
