New CD Reveals Ways to Bank Some Extra Cash on the Weekends

WASHINGTON, DC (PRWEB) August 27, 2004 - If you are recently unemployed or credit problems are holding you back from starting a business, buying a home or new car, here is important news. Government and private lending institutions are now joining forces to stimulate the national economy and make it easier for women, minorities and people with poor credit ratings to get low interest loans.

President Bush also announced a breakthrough for Faith Based and Community Organizations. Policies have been lifted which prohibited them from receiving government funding based on religious affiliations. Churches and religious based community organizations can now compete on equal footing for available federal dollars.

Michael Greene, a researcher for Government Publications in Washington, DC reported, "There are billions of dollars in grants and loans earmarked for people previously identified as credit risks. Public and private funds are now available for them to buy homes, cars, start a business, consolidate debts and any worthwhile purpose". In addition, he reported new financial resources have been committed to help the unemployed get job training and re-enter the job market.

"Now is the time for citizens to act if they need money for any worthwhile purpose", urged Greene. He also revealed that several reduced-cost and even free programs now exist to benefit economically disadvantaged and recently unemployed persons. Such programs include dental and vision care services, prescription plans and legal aid. Government Publications offers a CD-Rom that provides the latest information on the above programs. It covers free grant and loan resources available for a wide variety of purposes, including business start-ups. President Bush declared, "The entrepreneurial spirit in America is healthy. It is a great strength of our country. If you feel like you`ve got what it takes to start a business, if you want to go out on your own, you think you`ve got a good product, the country says, we welcome you to do so". This CD Rom includes start-up information on several home-based business opportunities. For example, How to Buy and Sell Foreclosed Properties, How to Start a Profitable Gift Basket Business, How to become a Loan Broker and Paid Online Surveys.

Free money helps make up for lost RESP time

Excerpted from...The Globe and Mail

RESPs and the sin of missed opportunity are the topic of today's sermon.

If you're a parent, registered education savings plans are almost as essential a financial planning tool as registered retirement savings plans. And yet, a Statistics Canada study released this month suggests nearly half of parents are unaware of RESPs.

What a waste. For RESP contributions of up to $2,000 a year, the federal government's Canada Education Savings Grant (CESG) offers a matching 20-per-cent payment. That's as much as $400 in free money available to help send your kid to university or college. What part of that doesn't sound good?

If you haven't got an RESP for your child, here are your marching orders. First, set up a plan at a bank or get a self-directed plan through a financial planning firm, full-service brokerage or on-line broker. Scholarship trusts are the least-attractive option because of their fees, restrictive rules and sales practices that have drawn the attention of the Ontario Securities Commission.

Consumers Beware Of Too Good To Be True Travel Promos - No FREE Casino Money

One of the latest schemes raising eyebrows and blood pressures is from National Casino Promotions. The company is advertising in newspapers across the nation, including the San Diego Union Tribune. In the local newspaper, the company advertises a three-day, two-night stay at resort hotels range from $99 to $199 with $200 worth of free "casino-action."

But consumers told the Troubleshooter that they sent their money and got nothing in return.

Travel agent Phyllis Dorfman of Rainbow Travel said by Vegas standards, the promotion is not a good bargain, anyway.

Dorfman said in the off season, Las Vegas hotels can run as low as $34 a night.

National Casino Promotions takes cash and checks only for payment, which makes the "bargain" even worse, Dorfman said.

Dorfman, who serves on Board of Directors for the San Diego Better Business Bureau, said that is definitely a tip-off to a rip-off.

"The only way to protect your travel investment is to pay by credit card" said Dorfman.

The BBB in eastern Washington has National Casino Promotions on its radar and issued a consumer alert.

"From what we've been told none of the Las Vegas casinos are participating in the this promotion," according to a BBB news release.

Some would-be travelers have received letters and a consolation gift from National Casino Promotions. The letter said the company's owner died, forcing them to cancel all trips scheduled after July 31, 2004.

Debt-free education

For Renatta Craven, there was never any doubt she would succeed in college.
Getting there, however, was another matter.

Her mother died of leukemia when Craven, a Raleigh 18-year-old, was just 2. Her father left the family. She was raised by her grandparents, and for the past 10 years by her grandmother alone.

Ida Craven, now 73, quit her job at Rose's department store after her husband died. Somehow, she and Renatta scraped by on Social Security. There seemed only one plausible way for Ida Craven to pay for her granddaughter's college education -- borrow against her tidy brick home

They found a much better deal. With a merit scholarship and grants through UNC-Chapel Hill's new financial aid program, Renatta Craven will attend the school for four years, absolutely free.

She is part of UNC-CH's first class of Carolina Covenant students, whose debt-free college education will be made possible through a combination of federal and state grants, scholarships, work-study funds and money from the campus. About 250 UNC-CH freshmen coming to campus this weekend will receive help through the Carolina Covenant.
